Project Context

The "1+1>2" exhibition showcases both individual and collaborative works by Yung-Wei Chen (陳詠薇) and Lu-Han Huang (黃律涵).

Huang and I both graduated from the Department of Arts and Design at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and are currently pursuing a Master's degree in Design at NTNU. Transitioning from craft and fine arts to product and service design has been a rewarding journey filled with learning, challenges, and joy, strengthening our mutual respect and support.

The "+" symbol, pronounced Chia in Mandarin (加-嘉), represents commendation (嘉許), encouragement (嘉勉), and self-expectation.
It also reflects our mentorship under Professor Kuei-Chia Liang (梁桂嘉), adding a unique layer of meaning to the exhibition. This connection highlights the shared educational lineage of the exhibitors and fosters a sense of community.

For the exhibition design, Huang selected a font with rounded arcs, capturing the solidity and elegance of calligraphy. The font, named "Jinxuan-Latte," sets the foundational tone of the exhibition. (justfont, 2019)

To complement this vibrant font, I drew inspiration from its strokes to design "number spirits" that align with the exhibition's theme.

Design System

To distinguish between collaborative and individual works in the exhibition space, we used colors from the primary visual design, applying distinct background hues to the posters for easy categorization.

Additionally, we placed unique "number spirits" in the top-right corner of each poster, helping viewers quickly grasp the exhibition's flow and the details of the artworks at a glance.

Lessons Learned

Bridging Design to the Public.

Presenting our designs to a public without a design background was a challenge, as arts and design programs are often overlooked in Taiwan's compulsory education. We needed to ensure that our intended design message was clearly conveyed. Therefore, the posters and exhibition design emphasized both visual authenticity and effective information communication.

Interacting with visitors gave us diverse perspectives on how people perceive, engage with, and respond to design in their daily lives. It provided Huang and me with valuable opportunities to step outside our comfort zones, making it a truly meaningful learning experience.

1+1>2 not only represents the synergy of our collaboration but also reflects the idea of integrating the power of design into Taiwanese society.
