Bringing Art into Daily Life

Bringing Art into Daily Life

Open Qingtian is a multidisciplinary project based on regional research of the Qingtian area in Taipei, Taiwan. This initiative was conducted as part of the course Special Study of Lifestyle.

The project involved exploring the book Pour de l’art dans notre quotidien: Des oeuvres en milieu urbain (Bringing Art into Our Daily Lives: Urban Artworks), which delves into how art can integrate with and enrich our everyday experiences.

Each student in the class analyzed artists from the book and drew inspiration from their works, sparking discussions about the role of art in daily life. The project aimed to connect artistic expression with the cultural, historical, and sensory dimensions of Qingtian.

Discovering Qingtian Through the Five Senses

Discovering Qingtian Through the Five Senses

The foundation of this project was a five-sense analysis of the Qingtian region, incorporating elements of vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. This approach provided a multidimensional understanding of the area's essence.

Additionally, I explored the themes of Pour de l’art dans notre quotidien to evaluate how urban artworks influence everyday life.

I observed that many urban art forms rely heavily on vision as the primary mode of engagement.

Inspired by Pour de l’art dans notre quotidien, I focused on memory as a bridge between past and present. However, I realized that while visuals can fade or blur over time, other senses, such as smell and hearing, often evoke stronger, grounding memories in a tangible way.

This realization guided my exploration of Qingtian’s evolution across eras: from the Showa period under Japanese rule, to post-WWII Taiwan, to today’s contemporary urban landscape.

Architecturally, the transition from low Japanese, style bungalows to taller modern apartments reflects cultural shifts, economic growth, and technological progress.

These sensory and historical layers reveal Qingtian as more than a place, it is an evolving story, shaped by memory, culture, and time.

My work centers on expanding the traditional focus of art beyond the visual domain.

Inspired by the book, the multisensory essence of Qingtian, and the temporal-spatial analysis, I proposed an installation that weaves together sensory experiences to immerse the audience in the region's unique atmosphere.

The installation invites participants to explore Qingtian through its sounds, scents, textures, and tastes, offering a richer and more intimate connection to the area.

By emphasizing senses often overlooked in art, such as smell and hearing, the project highlights how these elements can anchor memories more effectively than visual cues.

Expanding the Role of Non-Visual Senses

Expanding the Role of Non-Visual Senses

Expanding the Role of Non-Visual Senses

This project revealed the limitations of vision-centric art and highlighted the impact of engaging other senses in storytelling.

I learned how non-visual senses, such as smell and sound, can evoke stronger, more enduring memories. Additionally, the temporal and spatial analysis of Qingtian deepened my understanding of how urban environments evolve and how their histories shape collective and individual identities. These insights have refined my approach to creating art that resonates on a deeper, multisensory level.
